Description
The Eroica LX is a low-output moving coil (MC) cartridge designed by Goldring for high-end turntables. It is intended for systems already equipped with a phono preamplifier or an input dedicated to moving coil cartridges.
Its design relies on a powerful Neodymium magnet, which shortens the magnetic path and reduces the amount of iron used within the cartridge. This architecture results in a contained weight of 5.5 g, an important criterion for compatibility with certain tonearms. The cartridge body is made from Pocan, a rigid material that allows for a solid clamping fit on the tonearm's headshell and limits mechanical energy losses when tracking the groove.
Groove tracking is handled by a Gyger II type diamond, a stylus profile fitted to cartridges geared towards precise reproduction. As the output level is low, the Eroica LX must be paired with an amplifier or phono preamplifier featuring a dedicated MC input, otherwise the signal level will be insufficient.
This cartridge is aimed at turntable enthusiasts already familiar with moving coil playback, with a suitable phono chain upstream. It suits an installation where fixing rigidity and a lightweight headshell assembly are sought after.
What to check before buying used
The Gyger II stylus is unforgiving when it comes to wear: check under a microscope for any visible flat and for the integrity of the stylus mount, often weakened by a knock during a previous removal. The cantilever and its internal suspension can lose flexibility with age, which affects groove tracking and results in distortion on modulated passages. Also check the tightness of the connector pins on the Pocan body, whose threads are easily damaged when changing tonearms.
