The heart of the SR60x is a 44 mm driver known as 4th generation, developed specifically for this model. This driver combines a more powerful magnetic circuit, a voice coil with reduced effective mass and a reconfigured diaphragm. In practical terms, this architecture improves transducer efficiency, reduces distortion and preserves the harmonic coherence of the signal reproduced, resulting in a present midrange and well-defined voices.
The cable has also been reworked: it features 4 conductors in super annealed copper, housed within a more durable outer sheath, for improved purity of the audio signal transmitted to the driver. The headband has likewise been revised, with a more generous cushion designed to improve comfort during extended listening sessions.
These headphones are suited to portable or desktop listening, in a quiet environment, as the Grado range's open-back design lets ambient sound through and does not isolate against external noise. They are intended for personal use rather than shared spaces.
What to check before buying used
On a Grado SR60x, the foam ear pads sag and deteriorate over time: a compressed or cracked pair noticeably alters the sound and should be checked, or even replaced. Also check the headband and its fork, which are regular flex points, as well as the cable's continuity through to the jack, prone to twisting where it exits the earcups. Finally, listen to each capsule separately to rule out any level imbalance or crackling related to the driver.
