Description
The Diablo 333 is a high-end stereo integrated amplifier designed by Gryphon, intended to drive a pair of speakers directly without a separate preamplifier or power amplifier. It incorporates certain circuit and component developments derived from the Apex and Commander models, the brand's flagship references, applied here in an integrated format.
The power output reaches 2 x 333 W into 8 Ω, 2 x 666 W into 4 Ω and 2 x 1100 W into 2 Ω, reflecting an ability to almost double its power with each halving of load impedance and therefore a strong capacity to control demanding speakers. The very low output impedance of 0.015 Ω favours tight control of loudspeaker diaphragms. The bandwidth extends from 0.1 Hz to 350 kHz at -3 dB, a wide range that far exceeds the audible spectrum. The power supply is built around a Holmgren Dual-Mono transformer and a filtering capacitance of 2 x 68,000 µF, a specification that partly accounts for the unit's net weight of 50.6 kg and is intended to provide substantial dynamic headroom during the most demanding passages. The output transistors, ten per channel, are identical to those used in the Apex. The amplifier's gain is +38 dB, with a subwoofer output gain of +12 dB, and the inputs support an impedance of 50 kΩ balanced and 30 kΩ unbalanced across the 20-20,000 Hz band.
This model is aimed at demanding enthusiasts with a high-end system, seeking an integrated amplifier capable of replacing a separate preamp-power amp combination without compromising on power or control of speakers, including models with low or variable impedance.
Like the Diablo 300 that preceded it, the Diablo 333 can accept optional Phono and DAC modules, allowing direct integration of a turntable source or a digital source without additional external electronics.

What to check before buying used
With this type of very high-power integrated amplifier, checking the balance of the output stages deserves particular attention: with ten transistors per channel, thermal imbalance or a worn component can result in hum or distortion at high levels. The large filtering capacitors (2 x 68,000 µF) lose capacitance over years spent under voltage, which can affect the stated dynamic headroom. It is also advisable to test the switching between balanced and unbalanced inputs, as well as the motorised volume control, both sensitive points on units that have seen considerable use.
