Description
The Hana Umami Red is a low-output moving-coil (MC) cartridge, intended to equip a high-end turntable. Its output level of 0.4mV/1kHz requires the use of a dedicated phono stage or preamplifier compatible with MC, capable of amplifying weak signals without degrading the signal-to-noise ratio.
The diamond used is an integral Nude MicroLine, a stylus shape based on the cutting tool used to engrave the pressing matrix of records. This geometry follows the groove more closely than conventional shapes, which enhances the retrieval of detail and limits wear on both the diamond and the vinyl. The Boron cantilever and Samarium-Cobalt magnets contribute to the cartridge's rigidity and response, while the pure copper coils and overhang mounting complete a construction geared towards mechanical precision.
In terms of stated performance, the cartridge covers a frequency response of 10 to 50,000 Hz, with channel separation of 30dB/1kHz and a balance greater than 0.5dB/1kHz. Coil impedance is 6 Ohms/1kHz, with a recommended load greater than 60 ohms. The recommended tracking force is 2g, with a trackability of 70µm at this force.
This model is aimed at a user already equipped with a tonearm and a quality MC phono preamplifier, seeking a cartridge capable of rendering the fine nuances of a vinyl pressing on a demanding hi-fi system for analogue listening.

What to check before buying used
As the Nude MicroLine stylus is particularly fine and low-profile, check its condition under a microscope or, failing that, with a magnifying glass before purchasing, as an impact or wear on this type of diamond quickly results in a loss of definition in the treble. The boron cantilever, very rigid but brittle, does not forgive poor alignment or accidental contact with the record. Also check that both channels remain balanced when listening, as a balance discrepancy often indicates a worn coil or magnet on this type of low-output MC cartridge.
