Description
The Hegel H20 is a high-end stereo power amplifier, designed to amplify an already preamplified signal and power demanding speakers. It builds on the core design of the H30 reference amplifier, featuring Hegel's patented, laser-trimmed SoundEngine modules.
It delivers 2x200W into 8 ohms and 2x350W into 4 ohms, with current capabilities quoted at over 130 amperes. This reserve of power and current translates, when listening, into assured control of the speakers, particularly on bass lines, thanks to a high damping factor. The amplifier incorporates Hegel's proprietary FET technology, one of the benefits of which is the reduction of harmonic echoes in the high frequencies, resulting in sound described as more detailed and more natural.
The build is distinguished by an anodised aluminium front panel, weighing more than 1.5 kg on its own, along with bead-blasted and anodised top and side covers. The front panel features just a single button, in keeping with the minimalist spirit characteristic of Hegel's design, intended to fit as comfortably into a classic interior as a contemporary one.
This type of power amplifier is aimed at a user who already has a preamplifier and wishes to pair it with a power stage capable of driving current-hungry speakers, within a high-end hi-fi system seeking dynamics and bass control.

What to check before buying used
On the H20, check that the protection relays operate correctly on power-up and that there is no hum or distortion at high volume, which would indicate ageing capacitors. Inspect the anodised aluminium front panel, which is prone to micro-scratches and oxidation around the single button, as well as the condition of the bead-blasted covers. It is also advisable to check the tightness of the speaker terminals and the XLR/RCA inputs, as these connectors suffer wear from repeated connections.
