Description
With the Utah 5, Indiana Line offers a three-way floorstanding speaker whose cabinet is angled backwards, so as to direct the acoustic output towards the listening position rather than towards the ceiling or the listener's knees. Feet are supplied for placement on furniture, allowing two distinct set-ups depending on the room configuration. The manufacturer claims a tonal kinship with its Diva 6 and Tesi 6 series.
The bass section relies on a single 270 mm driver, or ten inches, with a polypropylene cone. A diameter of this size moves a large amount of air for a small excursion, which limits distortion in the lower part of the spectrum; the stated response indeed extends down to 38 Hz. The bass-reflex loading is handled by two ports located at the base of the cabinet, a placement that reduces audible turbulence as the level increases. The five-inch midrange and the 26 mm tweeter complete the array up to 22,000 Hz, with the crossover splitting the bands at 500 Hz and 2600 Hz.
The most decisive point in use remains the sensitivity of 94 dB for 2.8 V at one metre. This is a high output, which makes the Utah 5 undemanding in terms of watts: the recommended amplification range starts at 30 W and extends up to 160 W, leaving the door open to both a small integrated amplifier and a more powerful power amplifier. Impedance is given as 4 to 8 ohms.
This type of speaker suits living rooms where generous bass is desired without multiplying subwoofers, and those who enjoy listening at moderate volume: a high sensitivity allows substance to be retained in the lower spectrum even a few notches below the usual level. It lends itself equally well to a stereo system or to use as front speakers in a multichannel setup.

What to check before buying used
When buying a used unit, examination should first focus on the transducers: the surround of the 270 mm woofer should remain supple and free of cracks, the 26 mm tweeter dome must not be dented, and very gentle pressure on the bass cone should produce no voice coil rubbing. Next, check inside the two base ports, which are often dirty or deformed, as well as the base of the angled cabinet, which bears the 14 kg weight per speaker and whose lower edges are exposed to knocks. Finally, check the tightness and oxidation of the connection terminals, and make sure the original pair of feet is complete if you plan to place the speakers on furniture.
