Description
The Isol8 PowerLine Plus is a 6-outlet mains distribution block designed for audio systems where the quality of the mains supply matters. It is connected between the domestic mains network and hi-fi equipment to limit the radio-frequency pollution carried on the earth conductor.
Its operation is based on several targeted technical choices. The mains earth, owing to its finite impedance, behaves like an antenna capable of picking up RF energy; Isol8 addresses this with a bespoke earth choke, built around a high-permeability core, which strongly attenuates the RF interference present on the earth bar and on the signal ground. The unit also incorporates a unipolar shunt filter: this topology allows the live and neutral conductors to be connected directly to the load, providing effective noise attenuation without affecting the peak current available to connected equipment. The IEC input connector, made by Oyaide, is rhodium-plated.
This type of distribution block is aimed at hi-fi enthusiasts looking to improve the background silence of their system without resorting to a mains conditioner that actively filters every outlet. It suits a system where the aim is to specifically address RF noise carried via the earth, particularly when the system includes sources or amplifiers sensitive to high-frequency interference.
What to check before buying used
Check that the rhodium-plated IEC connector shows no play or signs of oxidation, as poor contact at this point would negate the entire benefit of the filtering. Also check the condition of the six mains outlets and their safety shutters, which are used every time equipment is plugged in. As the bespoke earth choke and shunt filter are components sealed within the housing, no adjustment or visual check of their internal operation is possible.
