Description
The JBL 4309 is a compact two-way bookshelf speaker, designed in the spirit of JBL studio monitors. It combines a one-inch 2410H-2 compression driver with an HDI waveguide and a 6.5-inch pure pulp cone woofer, in a bass-reflex cabinet with front port reinforced by V-shaped bracing.
The 2410H-2 compression driver is built around an annular ring diaphragm in Teonex with a V-shaped geometry, designed to limit breakup modes and reduce distortion while extending the treble response. Combined with the HDI waveguide, it provides a coverage angle of 100° horizontally and 80° vertically between 2 kHz and 17 kHz, with a crossover at 1.6 kHz to the woofer. The latter, fitted with a long-excursion voice coil and a copper shorting ring, aims for high efficiency with low distortion. The frequency response extends from 42 Hz to 30 kHz (-6 dB), with a sensitivity of 87 dB (2.83 V/1 m) and an impedance of 4 ohms. A front-mounted tone control, acting on the high-frequency filter, allows the sound to be adjusted according to the room or listening preferences.
This model is aimed at listeners looking for a compact speaker capable of delivering precise and detailed sound on a dedicated stand, at a recommended height of 609 mm. Its recommended amplification power of 25 to 150 W RMS makes it compatible with amplifiers of moderate to comfortable power, for listening at low to medium volume.

What to check before buying used
The woofer's pure pulp cone can show signs of handling marks or slight deformation over time: a visual check of the suspension and the absence of tears is worthwhile before purchase. Also check that the front-mounted tone control works properly, as its potentiometer can oxidise or become crackly on an older unit. Testing both channels at moderate volume confirms the integrity of the filter and the absence of distortion in the compression driver.
