The JBL L52 Classic is a 2-way bookshelf speaker, a compact version of the L82 Classic. It takes on the retro aesthetic codes of the Classic range, with its old-style Quadrex grille, while retaining the monitoring spirit inherited from the larger JBL speakers.
Its design combines a 13 cm woofer with a Pure Pulp cone and a 20 mm titanium dome tweeter fitted with a waveguide, with the crossover frequency between the two drive units set at 2.8 kHz. The 4 Ω impedance and 85 dB sensitivity determine how it responds to amplification: the recommended power ranges from 10 to 75 W, making it compatible with both modestly powered amplifiers and more generous setups. Its frequency response is stated as 47 Hz to 24 kHz, and it is bass-reflex loaded via a front-firing port, a solution that makes it easier to place near a wall. A treble level control allows the sound to be adjusted according to the listening room.

What to check before buying used
When buying used, it is worth checking the condition of the woofer's Pure Pulp cone, which is sensitive to warping and humidity, as well as the tweeter's titanium dome, which can show dents if it has been knocked. The front-firing bass-reflex port also deserves a visual check, as does the operation of the treble level control, whose potentiometer can become oxidised over time. Finally, the Quadrex grille, a defining feature of the model, should be examined to ensure it is neither broken nor discoloured.
