Description
The JBL MA7100HP is a 7.2-channel audio-video amplifier designed to drive a complete home cinema setup, from the video source through to the speakers. It handles surround format decoding, channel amplification and video switching, acting as the central hub of the system.
Dolby Atmos and DTS:X decoding allows for configurations of up to 7.1 or 5.1.2 channels, enabling the addition of height channels for an immersive sound experience. In terms of power, the unit delivers 125 W RMS per channel at 8 ohms and 175 W RMS at 4 ohms (20 Hz-20 kHz, 2 channels driven, 0.5% THD max), with bi-amping possible on the front channels. Digital signal processing runs up to 24-bit / 192 kHz, and the Pure Analog section allows the signal to remain unconverted in analogue form when desired.
The video section follows current standards: three HDMI 2.1 inputs supporting 8K / 60 Hz and 4K / 120 Hz, HDCP 2.3, HDMI eARC, as well as HDR10+ and Dolby Vision support. Six HDMI outputs complete the set-up, allowing the image to be distributed to multiple screens.
Network connectivity includes dual-band 2.4 / 5 GHz Wi-Fi, Gigabit Ethernet RJ45 and Bluetooth v5.3 with both reception and transmission, compatible with APTX HD and APTX Adaptive. Digital audio inputs (coaxial, optical, USB) and analogue inputs (2 RCA line level, one moving magnet phono input) allow for the connection of a turntable, network players or standard digital sources. Dedicated RCA pre-outs for a zone 2 and two subwoofers offer additional installation flexibility.

What to check before buying used
On this home cinema amplifier, each HDMI input and output should be tested one by one: the HDCP circuitry and 8K/4K120 repeaters of this generation are a classic weak point, as is eARC recognition with the TV. The volume potentiometer is worth listening to at low level to detect the crackling characteristic of worn tracks, and the power supply chokes may produce a slight audible hum with the subwoofer switched off. Checking the phono input and the zone 2 and subwoofer pre-amp outputs is also recommended, as these circuits see little use and are therefore prone to contact oxidation.
