Description
The JBL Summit AMA is a two-way, floorstanding bookshelf speaker in a Bass-Reflex configuration, positioned as the flagship model of the Summit series for 8-inch woofers. It is aimed at listeners seeking precise sound reproduction, combined with particularly careful construction and finish.
The treble is handled by the patented JBL D2815K 38 mm compression driver, with dual diaphragm and dual motor, coupled to a Sonoglass High-Definition Imaging (HDI) horn. This architecture aims for improved directivity and a more defined sound image in the upper part of the spectrum. Bass and midrange are handled by a moulded 200 mm woofer fitted with a triple-layer hybrid carbon-cellulose composite cone: carbon fibres and pure pulp on the front and rear faces, with an internal closed-cell foam core. This structure seeks a compromise between rigidity, controlled mass and power handling, with the aim of high efficiency and reduced distortion.
The cabinet features damped curved walls, reinforced by an internal multi-offset bracing structure, designed to limit internal standing waves. Two finishes are available: gloss black with Summit platinum accents, or gloss ebony veneer with Summit gold accents.
The speaker is supplied with a damped, high-mass floor stand, secured to the floor via bespoke JBL IsoAcoustic isolation feet. This decoupling system aims to limit the transmission of driver vibrations to the floor, with the goal of achieving more precise bass and a more defined soundstage.
This model is aimed at a demanding listener with a high-end hi-fi system, seeking a dedicated floorstanding speaker, with particular attention paid to vibration isolation and cabinet construction.
What to check before buying used
The suspensions of the 200 mm woofer should be examined closely: the internal closed-cell foam core can stiffen or crack over time, affecting bass reproduction. Also check the integrity of the Sonoglass horn and the D2815K compression driver, which are sensitive to impacts during removals. Finally, inspect the curved cabinet walls for varnish cracks, veneer lifting or signs of moisture, which would indicate unsuitable storage.
