Description
The Fathom V2 F112 is a powered subwoofer from JL Audio, fitted with a 12-inch long-throw driver and a Class D amplifier delivering 1800 watts RMS. Designed to integrate equally well into a music reproduction system or a home cinema installation, it is aimed at medium-sized rooms where full, controlled bass reproduction is required.
Its frequency response extends from 21 to 119 Hz (+/- 1.5 dB), with measurement points at - 3 dB from 19 Hz to 150 Hz, and at - 10 dB from 17 Hz to 167 Hz. This extension into the lowest frequencies allows it to reproduce the deepest effects of a film soundtrack as well as the finest nuances of a music recording, without the bass becoming vague or imprecise.
The front panel brings together all the signal processing controls: adjustable low-pass filter, variable phase, polarity inversion, E.L.F. trim filter and D.A.R.O. (Digital Automatic Room Optimization) automatic calibration system, supplied with a dedicated microphone to tailor the output to the room's acoustics. In terms of connectivity, the F112 V2 offers an unbalanced RCA input, a balanced Neutrik XLR/TRS input, as well as an XLR output allowing a second Fathom to be daisy-chained in slave configuration.
This subwoofer is aimed at a demanding user, with a dedicated room or a medium-sized home cinema lounge, wishing to complement a high-end hi-fi or audiovisual system with precise, deep bass reinforcement rather than a simple boost in sound volume.

What to check before buying used
The air intake drawer and the bass-reflex port must show no obstruction or deformation, which is essential for optimal operation of the 12-inch long-throw driver. Check that the D.A.R.O. microphone is included with the unit, without which automatic room calibration is not possible. Also test the front panel controls (phase, low-pass filter, E.L.F. trim) to rule out any seized potentiometer or faulty contact, and inspect the Class D amplifier at the rear for any sign of overheating.
