Kanto Tuk is a pair of active bookshelf speakers designed to cover a wide range of uses: turntable, desktop setup, living room or connected home system. Amplification and signal processing are built directly into the active speaker, removing the need for a separate amplifier to drive the pair.
Amplification is provided by a Class D stage delivering 130 W RMS in total, or 65 W RMS per channel. Full digital signal processing (DSP) adjusts the behaviour of the drivers and enables active filtering: frequencies below 80 Hz are filtered out when the speaker is paired with a subwoofer, improving the bass resolution delivered by the 5.25-inch aluminium woofers. The stated frequency response spans from 50 Hz to 20 kHz.
The tweeters use AMT technology (pleated ribbon transducer), lighter than a conventional dome. This light weight allows for a faster response in the treble, while their pleated construction increases the radiating surface to move more air than a dome tweeter of comparable size. Their rectangular shape limits vertical dispersion, reducing reflections off the floor and ceiling, while retaining wide horizontal dispersion for even listening across the room.
On the connectivity side, Tuk offers dedicated phono, RCA and optical TOSLINK inputs, a built-in USB DAC and headphone amplifier, as well as Bluetooth 4.2 with aptX HD, aptX and AAC codecs. aptX HD allows high-resolution wireless audio streaming on compatible devices, while aptX and AAC provide high-quality streaming with other sources.
This type of speaker suits a user looking to simplify their setup while keeping several sources connected: turntable via the phono input, computer via USB, television via optical, or smartphone via Bluetooth. What to check before buying used
On this type of active speaker, the input connectors (RCA, optical, USB) and the power port are worth checking with use, as is the volume dial, which can sometimes develop a crackle at the end of its travel over time. The AMT tweeter, with its pleated construction and vulnerability to direct impacts, should be visually inspected for any deformation. Also check the connecting cable between the active and passive speakers, as well as the condition of the 5.25-inch woofer's suspension, which ensures bass reproduction free of sagging or unwanted noise.
