Description
The KEF Kube 12 MIE is a sealed-enclosure active subwoofer, designed to complement a hi-fi or home cinema installation by adding extended low-frequency response. It features a 30 cm driver paired with a 300 W RMS amplification, sized to deliver bass with high sound pressure.
Its frequency response extends from 22 Hz to 140 Hz, allowing it to reproduce the lowest octaves, those that give body to home cinema effects as well as certain musical passages. Maximum sound pressure level reaches 114 dB. The sealed enclosure design, rather than bass-reflex, favours accurate and controlled bass reproduction, even at high volume, at the expense of slightly lower efficiency compared with a ported subwoofer. Three DSP equalisation profiles and phase settings, electrical at 0° or 180° and from 40 Hz to 140 Hz, ease integration and calibration in the listening room.
On the connectivity side, the subwoofer has a stereo RCA input that can operate at line level or LFE, a high-level input, as well as a dedicated port for an optional KEF KW1 receiver for a wireless connection to the amplifier or preamplifier.
This subwoofer is aimed at two-channel hi-fi systems as well as home cinema setups seeking precise bass extension rather than a simple level boost. Its size and weight of 18.6 kg make it a model intended for a semi-permanent installation rather than portable use.

What to check before buying used
The 30 cm driver and its suspension deserve direct inspection: check for sagging, tearing or rubbing noise by gently pushing the cone. Also check the proper operation of the built-in amplification and DSP settings (equalisation profiles, 0°/180° phase, 40-140 Hz filter), whose electronic circuits can age. The sealed enclosure cabinet must remain perfectly airtight: a loose seal or panel will permanently affect the bass reproduction.
