The LS50 Meta is a 2-way bass-reflex bookshelf speaker from KEF, built around the 12th-generation Uni-Q coaxial driver. This compact format aims for precise sound reproduction, suited to close-range stereo listening in a living room or study.
The Uni-Q driver combines a 25 mm vented aluminium dome tweeter with a 13 cm magnesium/aluminium alloy midrange-woofer, arranged as a single point source: both transducers emit from the same acoustic centre, which evens out sound dispersion throughout the room. The tweeter incorporates MAT metamaterial absorption technology, which treats sound emitted from behind the dome to limit unwanted resonances and refine treble reproduction. The crossover frequency sits at 2.1 kHz, with a stated frequency response of 79 Hz to 28 kHz (± 3 dB). With a sensitivity of 85 dB and a nominal impedance of 8 Ω (minimum 3.5 Ω), the speaker requires an amplifier capable of delivering between 40 and 100 W to be used to its full potential.

What to check before buying used
Check the surrounds of the Uni-Q midrange-woofer: sagging, tearing or a visual asymmetry between the two speakers points to a fatigued or already-replaced component. Inspect the tweeter's aluminium dome closely, as it sits exposed at the centre of the point source and is therefore vulnerable to fingermarks or accidental denting. Also examine the cabinet, corners, finish and removable grille, as well as the connection terminals at the rear, which can sometimes be oxidised or loose on a unit that has seen a lot of use.
