Description

The Q3 Meta is a 2-way bookshelf speaker from KEF, built around a 12th-generation Uni-Q coaxial driver. This compact format targets listeners who want to build a hi-fi system without excessive bulk, while retaining coherent sound reproduction.

The Uni-Q driver combines a 25 mm vented dome tweeter and a 16.5 cm midrange-woofer on the same axis, with a waveguide incorporating MAT (Metamaterial Absorption Technology), designed to absorb unwanted sound waves emitted from behind the dome. The rear-vented bass-reflex loading and Shadow Flare technology help widen the sound dispersion area. The crossover frequency is set at 2 kHz, the frequency response spans 49 Hz to 20 kHz (-3 dB), with a sensitivity of 87 dB and an impedance of 4 ohms (3.2 ohms minimum). The recommended amplification power ranges from 15 to 150 W, allowing fairly broad flexibility when choosing an amplifier.

This speaker is aimed at those building a first hi-fi system or looking for a compact pair for a living room or office, without requiring a high-powered amplifier. Its bookshelf format (210 x 357 x 305 mm, 8.2 kg) allows placement on furniture or stands without major space constraints.

What to check before buying used

The Uni-Q coaxial driver should be examined closely: the tweeter dome should be free of dents, tears or oxidation marks, and the midrange-woofer suspension should be supple, with no cracking or detachment that would indicate damp storage. Check for any play or rubbing noise by bringing a magnet close to the motor, which would indicate voice coil misalignment. Also inspect the rear bass-reflex port and the condition of the cabinet (veneer, corners, terminal fixings) to rule out any transport damage or cabinet deformation.
