Description
The R11 Meta is a 3-way bass-reflex floorstanding speaker, sitting at the top of KEF's R Series. It pairs a Uni-Q coaxial driver, which combines the tweeter and midrange at a single point of emission, with four 16.5 cm aluminium woofers arranged in a hybrid configuration on the speaker cabinet.
The Uni-Q driver, here in its 12th generation, comprises a 2.5 cm vented dome tweeter mated with a waveguide and a 12.5 cm coaxial midrange. This coaxial arrangement limits time delays between frequencies emitted from a single point. The crossover frequencies are set at 330 Hz and 2.9 kHz, defining the division of work between the woofers, midrange and treble. The frequency response extends from 47 Hz to 28 kHz at -3 dB, and from 30 Hz to 50 kHz at -6 dB, reflecting broad coverage in both the bass and extreme treble.
With a sensitivity of 90 dB (2.83 V/1 m) and a maximum sound level of 114 dB/1W/1m, the R11 Meta delivers a high sound level without requiring excessive amplifier power. Its 4-ohm input impedance (3.2 ohms minimum) and recommended amplifier power of between 16 and 300 W mean it must be paired with an amplifier capable of delivering current into a low load, particularly during dynamic passages.

What to check before buying used
On this large floorstanding speaker, check the surrounds of the four aluminium woofers: sagging or tearing of the peripheral foam indicates heavy use or damp storage. Also inspect the tweeter dome and Uni-Q coaxial midrange, which are particularly exposed to impact during handling and transport. Finally, check the condition of the cabinet and plinth, as well as the absence of play or unwanted noise in the bass-reflex ports.
