Description
The R2 Meta is a centre channel speaker designed by KEF to complement the floorstanding speakers of the R series within the same audio configuration. It occupies the centre position of a Left-Centre-Right (LCR) system, typically used to reproduce dialogue and central sound elements in a home cinema installation or a multichannel system.
It incorporates KEF's 12th generation Uni-Q drivers, combined with MAT (Metamaterial Absorption Technology). The Uni-Q principle involves having the entire driver act as a single point source, allowing sound to be dispersed more evenly throughout the room rather than concentrated on a single listening spot. MAT technology, meanwhile, relies on a labyrinthine structure placed behind the driver, capable of absorbing 99% of unwanted sound waves emitted towards the rear of the driver: this absorption reduces distortion and contributes to a purer, more natural reproduction.
The R2 Meta also features two 13 cm hybrid aluminium woofers, designed to maintain a compact format while ensuring sound reproduction suited to dynamic content, whether music or film soundtracks.
This model is aimed at those wishing to build or complement a multichannel system based on KEF's R series floorstanding speakers, particularly in modestly sized rooms where footprint must remain limited without sacrificing listening quality.
What to check before buying used
The surrounds of the two aluminium woofers should remain supple and free from cracks or deformation, as any sagging indicates a loss of acoustic seal. The dome of the Uni-Q driver, more exposed due to its central position, deserves careful visual inspection for finger marks, dents or tears. It is also worth checking for any looseness or parasitic vibrations in the grille and cabinet, as well as the condition of the connection terminals at the rear of the enclosure.
