Description
The R7 Meta is a 3-way bass-reflex floorstanding speaker, positioned at the heart of KEF's R range. It is set up in pairs for stereo listening or can be integrated into a multichannel home cinema configuration, as a front speaker or as a complement to an existing system.
Its architecture is built around a Uni-Q coaxial driver combining a 2.5 cm vented dome tweeter and a 12.5 cm midrange placed at the same point of emission, an arrangement aimed at improving the spatial coherence of the sound. Two 16.5 cm hybrid aluminium woofers complete the setup and handle the low frequencies. The frequency response is stated as 49 Hz to 28 kHz at -3 dB, extending from 34 Hz to 50 kHz at -6 dB, with crossover frequencies set at 400 Hz and 2.4 kHz. What to check before buying used
Check for sagging or tearing of the surrounds on both aluminium woofers, a common defect on heavily used speakers. Examine the Uni-Q tweeter dome, which is exposed and therefore vulnerable to impact or deformation. Also inspect the cabinet (veneer, corners, plinth) for signs of moisture damage, chips or separation, and test each driver separately to detect any crackling or loss of midrange output, which would indicate an internal wiring issue.
