Description
The Reference 3 Meta is a 3-way floorstanding speaker from the KEF Reference range, designed with a bass-reflex configuration. It combines a Uni-Q midrange-tweeter array with two woofers, positioned above and below this array in a D'Appolito arrangement, intended to deliver an enveloping and natural sound within the listening room.
The Uni-Q system brings together a 25 mm vented aluminium tweeter and a 125 mm aluminium midrange driver in a coaxial arrangement, a layout designed to align the emission points of the treble and midrange frequencies to reduce tonal discontinuities between the two ranges. The two 165 mm aluminium woofers, placed symmetrically on either side of the Uni-Q, contribute to bass reproduction while forming part of the D'Appolito configuration specific to this model.
The frequency response extends from 43 Hz to 35 kHz (±3 dB), with a sensitivity of 87.5 dB (2.83 V/1 m) and a maximum output power of 113.5 dB. The impedance is 8 ohms, with a minimum of 3.2 ohms, which calls for an amplifier capable of delivering sufficient current through the impedance dips. The recommended amplifier power ranges from 50 to 300 W.

What to check before buying used
On both woofers as well as on the Uni-Q midrange, check the flexibility of the front surrounds, the absence of cracking or rubbing at full excursion, and the condition of the tweeter's aluminium dome, which is sensitive to impacts and deformation. Also check the cabinet finish of the towers (veneer, corners, base) and the integrity of the bass-reflex ports at the rear. A test at moderate volume on each channel helps identify any tonal mismatch between the two woofers or localised distortion indicating a worn driver.
