Description
The KEF Reference 5 Meta is a 3-way bass-reflex floorstanding speaker, designed to reproduce music and soundtracks with an enveloping sound image. It relies on KEF's proprietary Uni-Q architecture, which places the tweeter at the acoustic centre of the midrange driver in order to align the dispersion points of the treble and midrange frequencies.
The top of the cabinet houses a 25 mm vented aluminium dome tweeter coupled with a 125 mm aluminium midrange, forming the Uni-Q array. Bass frequencies are handled by four 165 mm aluminium woofers, arranged two above and two below the Uni-Q module. The frequency response extends from 40 Hz to 35 kHz, with harmonic distortion below 0.2% between 200 Hz and 10 kHz, a criterion that reflects clean reproduction across most of the audible spectrum. The sensitivity of 90 dB (2.83V/1m) and impedance of 8 Ω (minimum 3.2 Ω) allow it to be paired with a recommended amplifier of between 50 and 400 W, with a maximum output level of 116 dB.

What to check before buying used
The surrounds of the four 165 mm woofers deserve close inspection: look for cracks, hardening or sagging, signs of prolonged storage in a damp or overly warm environment. Also check the vented aluminium dome of the Uni-Q tweeter, particularly exposed to impacts and deformation during handling. Inspect the cabinet and integrated base for scratches, chips in the finish or signs of misalignment, and listen to each channel separately to detect any possible unwanted noise or loss of output in the bass-reflex port.
