Description
The Klipsch La Scala AL6 is a 3-way floorstanding speaker belonging to the Heritage range. Each of the woofer, midrange and treble registers has its own compression-chamber driver coupled to a dedicated horn, a fully horn-loaded design intended to maximise efficiency while limiting distortion. The speaker is handmade in the United States, with a multi-ply plywood cabinet and a natural wood finish.
Its sensitivity of 103 dB/1W/1m makes it possible to achieve a high sound level with very little amplifier power, the speaker accepting 100 watts continuous (400 watts peak) for a maximum sound pressure level of 120 dB. Frequency response extends from 40 Hz to 19 kHz (± 4 dB), with crossover frequencies set at 425 Hz and 2900 Hz, and an impedance of 8 ohms. The 3-inch K-1133-H midrange driver, paired with a redesigned Tractrix K-406M horn, provides a larger compression chamber than the previous generation, which improves vocal reproduction and increases output level without placing greater demand on the amplifier. The 2.5 cm K-77 tweeter uses a polyimide diaphragm with a compression chamber and a phase plug. New to this generation, the 30 cm K-28 woofer is now paired with a bass-reflex loading, a redesigned lower enclosure allowing bass response to be extended down to 40 Hz while retaining the speed and low distortion characteristic of horn loading.
This speaker is aimed at listeners seeking a direct, dynamic musical reproduction, capable of conveying the sound level of an original recording, whether a small acoustic ensemble or a symphony orchestra. Its very high sensitivity suits low-power amplifiers, particularly tube amplifiers, and it is equally well suited to listening to vinyl records, CDs, HD audio files, and films.

What to check before buying used
Check the condition of the woofer suspension inside the folded horn: sagging or tearing results in a dull sound or unwanted noises at high volume. Also examine the plywood cabinet (corners, veneer, any chips on the large exposed horns) and check that the midrange and treble compression chambers are properly secured, as misalignment degrades vocal clarity. Given the weight and size of these speakers, which make transport awkward, an impact during a previous move may also have dislodged an internal horn, which would not be visible from the outside.
