Description
The RP-404C II is a centre channel speaker from Klipsch's Reference Premiere range, designed to reproduce dialogue and central effects in a home cinema system. Its shallow sealed cabinet was designed to allow installation within a wall or in confined spaces, such as a mantelpiece, without the bass being compromised by a nearby surface.
The speaker pairs four 10.16 cm woofer/midrange drivers with Cerametallic cone and aluminium surround to a 2.5 cm titanium dome tweeter mounted on an LTS suspension, loaded by a hybrid 90° x 90° Tractrix horn made of silicone composite. This pairing aims for a smooth frequency response, from 87 Hz to 25 kHz (+/- 3 dB), with a sensitivity of 94 dB /W/m that allows the speaker to be driven efficiently even with a modest power amplifier. What to check before buying used
Listen to each Cerametallic driver at low volume to detect any crackling or distortion indicating a worn suspension, particularly if the speaker has long been positioned near a heat source such as a mantelpiece. The titanium tweeter dome and its silicone composite Tractrix horn should be free of cracks or dents, as an impact could affect treble reproduction. Also check the condition of the cabinet and veneer given the low, elongated shape, which is more exposed to knocks during handling, and confirm that the magnetic grilles are securely fitted.
