The RP-1000SW is an active subwoofer from Klipsch, designed to complement a hi-fi or home cinema installation by providing the low-end extension that main speakers cannot deliver on their own. It has its own built-in amplifier, allowing it to operate independently as soon as it is connected to a source or an amplifier-preamplifier.
Its Cerametallic woofer and front-firing Aerofoil port, designed to limit air turbulence, aim for accurate bass reproduction rather than a simple increase in volume. The built-in amplifier pairs an analogue preamplifier with a Class D output stage, an architecture that delivers 300 W RMS (600 W peak) while maintaining high electrical efficiency. What to check before buying used
On a subwoofer of this age, check that the Cerametallic woofer shows no sagging of the suspension or rubbing noise at full excursion, a sign of voice coil misalignment. Also check the front-mounted Aerofoil port, which can crack or become dislodged over time, and test the Class D stage at different levels to rule out any hum or thermal protection cut-out. The phase selector and level controls, often little used, are worth testing through their full range to detect any loose contact.
