Description
The THX-5000-SUR is a surround speaker from Klipsch, designed to be recessed or mounted at the periphery of a home cinema room. Its bipolar design and THX certification aim to reproduce enveloping ambient effects, complementary to the front channels of a multichannel installation.
The speaker features two 133 mm Cerametallic midrange/woofer drivers as well as two 25 mm titanium dome tweeters housed in Tractrix horns. This bipolar architecture radiates sound towards both the front and rear of the cabinet, an arrangement that helps to dilute the pinpoint localisation of surround speakers and create a more diffuse sound field within the room. The sealed enclosure, built from MDF, contributes to the mechanical rigidity of the unit. With a sensitivity of 96 dB (2.83 V at 1 m) and a nominal impedance of 8 ohms, it can be paired with moderately powered amplifiers while still delivering a sustained sound level. Its frequency response extends from 80 Hz to 20 kHz (+/-3 dB), with a crossover frequency of 2100 Hz between the woofer and the tweeter. It accepts a power handling of 100 W RMS, with a peak power of 400 W.
This model is aimed at home cinema installations arranged in a multichannel configuration, where the speaker occupies a surround or ceiling channel position. Its rear wall-mounting bracket makes it easy to integrate into a room dedicated to picture and sound, without requiring a floorstanding speaker or dedicated cabinet.

What to check before buying used
On this bipolar model, check that the two Cerametallic drivers and the two Tractrix tweeters respond symmetrically at both the front and rear of the cabinet, as a fault in a single transducer is enough to break the intended diffusion effect. Inspect the suspensions of the 133 mm midrange/woofer drivers, whose flexibility can deteriorate with age, as well as the condition of the MDF cabinet and its veneer, particularly at the corners and on the faces intended for recessed mounting. Finally, check the connection terminals at the rear, which are often stressed during wall or peripheral room mounting.
