Description
The Klipsch XF-48 Icon is an active floorstanding speaker: it houses its own bi-amplified amplification, which allows a complete sound system to be built without going through an external amplifier. The signal can be fed in at line level via RCA or at speaker level, allowing several installation configurations depending on the available source.
The internal amplification delivers 110 W continuous (200 W peak), split between 25 W in Class AB dedicated to the tweeter and 85 W in Class D for the woofer section. This separation allows the type of amplification to be matched to each transducer: Class AB for precision in the treble, Class D for efficiency and power handling in the bass. The top of the spectrum is handled by a 19 mm titanium diaphragm compression driver, loaded by a Tractrix horn, an architecture that favours good dispersion and dynamic treble reproduction. The bass relies on two fibreglass woofers paired with two passive radiators, a configuration designed to extend the response into low frequencies without resorting to a separate subwoofer. The stated sensitivity is 96.5 dB, and the frequency response spans 40 Hz to 23 kHz (± 3 dB).

What to check before buying used
On a bi-amplified active floorstanding speaker such as the XF-48, systematically test the built-in electronics: the Class D bass section and the Class AB treble module should deliver a clean sound at high volume, without hum, hiss or unexpected cutting out. Inspect the titanium compression driver and Tractrix horn, which are sensitive to impacts, as well as the suspension of the passive radiators and fibreglass woofers. Finally, check that the RCA inputs and speaker terminal show no play or oxidation, and that any internal controls or potentiometers respond without crackling.
