Description
The Leak CDT is a CD transport, that is to say a CD player without an analogue conversion stage. It extracts the digital signal from the disc and transmits it, via its digital outputs, to a converter (DAC) or to an amplifier fitted with digital inputs responsible for the final sound reproduction.
The unit only offers two digital outputs, coaxial (75 Ω) and optical, with no analogue output. Signal extraction relies on a temperature-compensated crystal oscillator (TCXO), designed to limit jitter and deliver a more stable digital stream at the output. The output level is 500 mVpp, with a stated response of 20 Hz to 20 kHz. The CDT also features USB playback, allowing direct playback of a drive containing WAV, MP3, AAC or WMA files.
This transport is aimed at enthusiasts who already own a DAC or an amplifier fitted with quality digital inputs, and who wish to keep playing physical CDs without going through an intermediate analogue conversion. It will particularly suit those who favour a modular digital system, where each link (playback, conversion, amplification) is chosen separately.
Aesthetically, the CDT follows the visual codes of the Leak brand, with walnut veneer cabinetry that stands out from the more neutral finishes of contemporary units.

What to check before buying used
The optical reading block remains the sensitive point: check that the tray opens and closes without forcing and that disc recognition is immediate, with no lock-ups or skips during playback. Also check that the coaxial and optical outputs work correctly, as well as USB playback with a drive loaded with different formats. An inspection of the walnut finish is also required, as this veneer is sensitive to marks and humidity.
