Description
The CD100 Evolution is a compact disc player designed by Atoll electronique, belonging to the brand's Evolution series. It serves as a source in a traditional hi-fi system, and can evolve into a converter function for other digital sources thanks to an optional digital input card.
The design places great emphasis on the power supply and analogue stages. The output stages are Class A-biased, an operating mode sought after for the richness of harmonic spectrum and refinement of reproduction it allows. These stages have their own power supply, provided by a 160 VA toroidal transformer: by separating the power requirements of the analogue section in this way, interactions with the rest of the electronics are limited. The circuit has been revised compared to previous generations, and several manufacturing choices go in the same direction: double-sided nickel/gold-plated circuit board, selected coupling capacitors, heat sinks and thermal protection.
The optional card opens the unit up to dematerialised files. It uses the converter already present in the player, accepts streams up to 24-bit/192 kHz and offers a USB input operating in asynchronous mode, meaning controlled by the player's clock rather than that of the source computer.
The remote control supplied with the unit gives access to the usual playback functions, track programming, random playback, repeat, and also controls the brand's other electronics: integrated amplifiers, preamplifiers, tuner and converter. This player is aimed at listeners who own a physical music collection and want a stereo source capable of matching serious amplification, with the option of adding a digital input later without changing units.

What to check before buying used
The optical unit remains the wear-prone part of a CD player: ask to listen to a disc from start to finish, including the final tracks near the edge of the disc, and watch for playback glitches or an unusually long access time. The tray is worth opening and closing several times in a row to spot a worn drive belt, a common symptom shown by a tray that slips or closes on its own. Also check that the digital input card is actually present if advertised, as this is an option, and that the original remote control comes with the unit, as it gives access to programming and playback modes.
