Description
The CD 200 Evolution is a hi-fi CD player designed by the French manufacturer Atoll electronique, a member of the Evolution range. It plays commercial CDs as well as burned CD-R and CD-RW discs containing MP3, WMA or AAC files, thanks to a TEAC CD-5020B transport mechanism.
Digital decoding relies on a Burr-Brown PCM1792A converter, paired with current/voltage converters using bipolar transistors. The output stages are differential, built from discrete components, biased in class A, with DC coupling that eliminates any coupling capacitor from the signal path. Power is supplied separately for the audio and digital stages: a low-noise toroidal transformer powers the audio section, a 30 VA transformer powers the digital section, all distributed across seven regulated power supplies, including a dedicated low-noise dual supply for the converter.
The unit can optionally be fitted with a 24-bit/192 kHz DAC board using the player's internal converter, with an asynchronous USB input, allowing it to also be used as a digital interface for an external source.

What to check before buying used
The drawer and the TEAC CD-5020B optical block deserve careful checking: a drawer that struggles to open or hesitant playback on burned CDs often points to a worn mechanism. Also check that all seven regulated power supplies work correctly and that there is no background noise, which would indicate ageing capacitors. If the unit is fitted with the optional DAC board, test that the asynchronous USB input is recognised with an external source.
