Atoll electronique CD 80 Evolution

The CD 80 Evolution is the entry-level compact disc player from Atoll electronique, in its so-called Evolution version. The transport mechanism is carried over from the previous generation, but the manufacturer has focused its work on two structural points: the power supply and the digital-to-analogue conversion stage. This is a source intended to sit within a classic stereo system, alongside an integrated amplifier or a preamplifier.

The original design was redrawn with the aim of improving both musicality and connectivity. Several components were upgraded in the process: double-sided nickel/gold-plated circuit board, coupling capacitors, heatsinks and thermal protection. These choices are not visible on a graph, but translate in use into electronics that operate under controlled thermal conditions and a signal path less prone to contact degradation.

On listening, the character described lies in substance and density: the CD 80 Evo seeks to give body to the presentation rather than to colour it. Its neutrality lets each instrument occupy its own place, while the bass is firm and precise. This is the profile of a player readily paired with speakers already generous in the lower end of the spectrum, where a soft source would quickly make itself felt.

Connectivity can be extended with an optional card that adds three digital inputs: coaxial, optical and USB. The unit then also becomes a converter for a television, a network player or a computer, which considerably extends its usefulness in a system where CD is no longer the sole source. As this card is an option, its presence varies from one unit to another: this is the first thing to check.

The remote control supplied as standard goes beyond simply operating the player: it controls the entire Atoll range, integrated amplifiers, preamplifiers, tuner and DAC, and provides access to the usual playback functions, including programming, random playback and repeat. It therefore makes full sense for anyone building an all-Atoll system, and its presence has a direct bearing on ease of use.
