Description
The Atoll electronique MS120 is a network player designed to stream audio files stored on a home network, via wired or Wi-Fi connection. Compatible with DLNA and UPnP protocols, it fits into an existing hi-fi system and replaces both a digital source and a preamplifier, thanks to its built-in preamplification stages.
The unit displays information about the tracks being played: names, tags, resolutions and album artwork. It handles gapless playback between tracks and allows playlists to be created. External control is possible via applications such as Qobuz or Audirvana, using the RTSP protocol.
On the electronic side, the MS120 stands out for its preamplifier stages built from discrete components, operating in pure class A without feedback, a configuration valued for the sound quality it enables. Volume is controlled in analogue fashion, via a switched resistor system, with the option to bypass it if the unit is used purely as a digital source. Digital-to-analogue conversion relies on a Burr-Brown PCM1796 chip.
This network player is aimed at fans of dematerialised music wishing to simplify their hi-fi chain while retaining a high level of sound quality, particularly those already owning a separate power amplifier and looking for a digital source capable of driving active speakers or a power amplifier directly.
What to check before buying used
On this network player, the digital connections deserve priority checking: the network (RJ45) and USB sockets should be checked for looseness or oxidation, which are signs of a stable link with the NAS or router. The Wi-Fi module, more prone to software obsolescence, may become less reliable to connect depending on the firmware version installed. It is also worth confirming that firmware updates remain possible, as some older units are no longer recognised by the current control app.
