Description
The Vault 2i is a network player from Bluesound designed to centralise a digital music collection. It allows CDs to be ripped directly in high-resolution FLAC or MP3 format, an existing music library to be imported, or high-resolution files purchased from online services such as Qobuz to be stored. Once the music is stored, the unit connects to an existing sound system or to amplified speakers to play it back.
The unit features a silent internal 2 TB hard drive, for storing a large number of tracks with no practical limit on the collection size. A dual-core ARM Cortex A9 processor handles multitasking, while Gigabit Ethernet connectivity provides the bandwidth needed to stream high-resolution content simultaneously to several rooms. The Vault 2i plays music sources up to Studio Master 24-bit/192 kHz resolution, whether over Wi-Fi, Bluetooth or the local Ethernet network. Analogue and digital inputs and outputs also allow existing amplified speakers to be connected, and USB ports are used to back up or restore the music collection.
This network player is aimed at music lovers wishing to bring together CDs, high-resolution files and online streams within a single system, controlled from a smartphone or tablet via the BluOS Controller app. It is particularly suited to multiroom installations, with synchronised or independent playback to other Bluesound speakers in different rooms, and also integrates with Amazon Alexa for voice control.
What to check before buying used
The internal 2 TB hard drive is the key element to check: it should be verified that it starts up correctly, shows no abnormal noises, and that its full capacity remains accessible with no bad sectors. The proper operation of the CD ripping module is also worth testing, as this is a mechanical function used with every extraction. It is also worth checking that the unit connects without difficulty to the Ethernet or Wi-Fi network and that it is recognised by the BluOS app, as some older firmware versions may require an update.
