Description
The Sonos Port is a network unit designed to integrate a classic stereo system, amplifier or hi-fi set-up, into the Sonos ecosystem. It bridges an existing audio installation with the world of connected streaming, without requiring the replacement of the amplifier or speakers already in place.
Control is carried out via the Sonos app or via Apple AirPlay 2, allowing playback to be started from a smartphone or tablet without directly handling the unit. The system can then be extended to other rooms in the house, by pairing the Port with other Sonos speakers for multi-room playback.
The Port provides access to streaming music, podcasts, audiobooks and web radio directly on an amplified audio system. It also allows the reverse: broadcasting a physical source, vinyl, CD or local audio file, to Sonos speakers installed in other rooms of the home.
Compatibility with Apple devices allows streaming from an iPhone or iPad, and calling on Siri to play tracks from Apple Music.
This type of unit is aimed at those who already own a quality amplifier and speakers and wish to add streaming and multi-room functions without changing their set-up. It is also suited to combined use with a turntable or CD player, to send these analogue sources to other areas of the home.
What to check before buying used
The network antenna connector and the power socket are worth checking, as an oxidised or weakened contact can cause intermittent Wi-Fi disconnections. Also test the analogue output and the optical/coaxial output: a damaged port deprives the unit of its connection to the amplifier. Lastly, a unit that has seen heavy use may require a firmware update before joining an existing Sonos system.
