The Lehmann Audio Black Cube is a phono preamplifier designed to amplify and correct the signal from a turntable cartridge before it enters an amplifier or hi-fi system. On the market since 1995, it has established itself as a benchmark in its category and gave rise to a more affordable variant, the Black Cube Statement, identical in appearance but distinct in its power supply.
The chassis takes the form of a sober black box, with the input and output RCA connections positioned at either end. Underneath the unit, two small windows provide access to the gain settings, suited to MM and MC cartridges, as well as the impedance setting. These adjustments are made via eight micro-switches, allowing the preamp to be precisely matched to the cartridge in use.
When listening, the Black Cube stands out for a musical presentation marked by transparency and definition, articulate and physical bass, notable tonal richness, as well as a soundstage that is both wide and precise. What to check before buying used
The eight gain and impedance micro-switches, accessible underneath the unit, should engage correctly in each position, with no faulty contact or dirt lodged between the pins. The input and output RCA sockets warrant careful checking, as any play or oxidation could introduce hum or channel dropout. Checking the external power supply and its wiring is also worthwhile, as this is precisely the point that distinguishes the Black Cube from the Statement model.
