Description
The Magnat MA 900 is a hybrid amplifier that combines tube preamplification with class A/B transistor power amplification. This architecture allows direct control of stereo speakers, with tone and balance control on the brushed aluminium front panel, without requiring an additional power amplifier.
The preamplification stage relies on two ECC 81 tubes hand-selected to present similar values, then run in for several hours before installation in order to reach their final performance straight out of the box. This step, combined with a toroidal transformer, aims to bring the harmonic colouration characteristic of tubes while retaining the power delivered by the transistors: 2 x 200 watts at 4 ohms and 2 x 130 watts at 8 ohms, with a frequency response of 6 Hz to 100 kHz (-3 dB). A subsonic filter at 16 Hz with 3rd-order slope protects the bass from unwanted interfering signals, while a Cyrus Logic 24-bit / 192 kHz DAC and Bluetooth 5.0 compatible with aptX HD open the way to digital and wireless sources.
Connectivity includes five RCA stereo line inputs, a mini-jack input, an MM phono input and an MC phono input, two coaxial S/PDIF inputs, two Toslink optical inputs, a 6.35 mm jack headphone output and a type A USB port for updates, complemented by screw-type speaker terminals.

What to check before buying used
The preamplifier's ECC 81 tubes are the element to check as a priority: a test of their condition and matching allows verification that they retain consistent values and that no hum or loss of gain has developed with use. The MM and MC phono inputs, as well as the front-panel tone and balance control, should also be tested, as these may be prone to crackling if the potentiometers or contacts have aged. A check of the Bluetooth and the built-in DAC's proper functioning usefully completes this inspection.
