Description
The Magnat MR 780 is a hybrid amplifier tuner combining tube preamplification with a transistor power stage. It integrates a DAB/DAB+ tuner as well as an FM receiver, bringing together amplification and radio reception functions in a single unit.
The preamplification relies on preselected and vitrified ECC81 tubes, a choice aimed at bringing a warm sonic colouration to the listening experience. The power stage is built around a toroidal transformer with low stray field and delivers 100 watts of sinusoidal power per channel into 4 ohms, enough to drive speakers with demanding power requirements. For digital sources, a Wolfson D/A converter handles streams up to 192 kHz in 24 bits, and an aptX Bluetooth connection allows wireless streaming from a smartphone or tablet. A phono input dedicated to MM cartridges completes the full set of analogue and digital connections.

What to check before buying used
The ECC81 tube preamplifier deserves a check on power-up: listen for humming, excessive hiss or a crackling sound, symptoms of a worn tube or a poor contact in its socket.
