Magnetar UDP800 MKII
Universal 4K UHD Blu-ray, SACD and CD player from Magnetar, fitted with an ESS Sabre ES9028Pro DAC and Roon Ready certification, for demanding audiophile and home cinema installations.
Description
The Magnetar UDP800 MKII is a universal player capable of playing Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, DVD, DVD Audio, SACD and CD discs, as well as networked media files. It is aimed at installations combining high-definition video and audiophile listening, with a dual HDMI output allowing audio and video streams to be separated for purer digital transmission.
The audio circuit is built around an ESS Sabre ES9028Pro DAC paired with seven OPA1602 operational amplifiers, with a signal-to-noise ratio and dynamic range rated at 120 dB. Sampling rates range from 8 kHz to 192 kHz at 16, 20, 24 and 32 bits, and the system clock covers several frequency multiples (128 fS to 1152 fS), allowing precise synchronisation depending on the source being played. The differential voltage output reaches 8 VPP, with bandwidth ripple contained to ± 0.0018 dB, ensuring linearity of the reproduced signal.
On the video side, the player features a dedicated Magnetar processing engine for optimising colour, contrast and brightness, along with HDMI processing via TMDS retiming designed to reduce signal jitter. The sound-insulated chassis and rigid optical drive limit vibrations, while the high-purity copper internal wiring, JST and Amphenol PCB connectors, and double-layer shielding aim to preserve signal stability against electromagnetic interference. The large-capacity toroidal PCB transformer and audiophile-grade capacitors complete this architecture.
This player is aimed at home cinema and audiophile listening enthusiasts wishing to centralise playback of various physical media (Blu-ray, SACD, CD, DVD Audio) and network files, in formats including MKV, FLAC, DSD and AIFF. Its compatibility with Dolby Atmos, DTS:X and equivalent audio formats makes it a suitable component for multichannel home cinema systems. Roon Ready certification allows direct integration into a network streaming ecosystem, and compatibility with Control4 and Crestron makes it easy to control within a home automation installation.

What to check before buying used
The disc tray and optical drive deserve priority checking: a noisy or hesitant ejection often indicates a worn mechanism, which is difficult to find as a spare part for this model. Playback of several media types (Ultra HD Blu-ray, SACD, DVD Audio) should also be tested to ensure the laser still reads the most demanding discs correctly. Finally, both HDMI outputs and the differential output should be checked, as these connections are heavily used and can sometimes suffer from imperfect contact after several years of use.
