Description

The Magnetar UDP 900 II is a universal disc player capable of playing Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D, DVD, DVD Audio, SACD and CD formats. It combines high-definition video playback and high-resolution audio playback within a single unit, designed to integrate into a home cinema system or a hi-fi installation combining picture and sound.

The unit houses two separate digital-to-analogue converters: a Sabre ES9038PRO DAC dedicated to the balanced XLR and unbalanced RCA stereo outputs, and a Sabre ES9028PRO DAC reserved for the 7.1 RCA outputs, allowing separate processing depending on stereo or multichannel use. Power is supplied by two independent 60 W transformers, one for the analogue audio section with oxygen-free copper wiring, the other for the digital board, in order to limit electrical noise and interference between stages. The double-layer aluminium alloy chassis also isolates sensitive components from vibration and external magnetic fields. On the video side, the player supports HDR10, HDR10+ and Dolby Vision, as well as 4K upscaling of 1080p sources and True Cinema 24p. On the audio side, it decodes the main home cinema formats (Dolby Atmos, DTS:X, DTS-HD MA) and plays multimedia files such as FLAC, DSD, AIFF or MKV, with a signal-to-noise ratio of 110 dB and a dynamic range of 120 dB.

This player is aimed at home cinema and high-fidelity music enthusiasts wishing to combine UHD video playback and high-resolution audio playback in a single unit, particularly those with an amplifier or preamplifier featuring XLR or 7.1 multichannel inputs capable of making full use of its dedicated outputs.

What to check before buying used

The tray and optical block deserve particular attention on this type of universal player: check that playback of the various media (Blu-ray, SACD, DVD Audio, CD) runs without jamming or abnormal mechanical noise. Also check that both HDMI outputs and the XLR/RCA/7.1 audio outputs work properly, along with USB device recognition at the front and rear. Testing with several types of discs and multimedia files helps to confirm that both DACs and the HDR/Dolby Vision functions respond correctly.
