Description
The AMP 20 is a multichannel power amplifier from Marantz, designed to directly power the speakers of a home cinema installation. Unlike an integrated amplifier, it handles neither decoding nor source selection: its role is to provide the raw power required for each channel, downstream of an audio-video processor such as the AV 20.
It delivers 12 channels of power in a single chassis, each capable of providing 200 W into 8 ohms (measured at 1 kHz, 0.05% distortion, 2 channels driven) and up to 400 W into 6 ohms under the same conditions. This identical power reserve on each channel allows front, centre, surround and effect speakers to be powered simultaneously, without any channel being under-specified relative to the others.
Connectivity includes 12 unbalanced RCA inputs and 12 balanced inputs, as well as a remote control input and output, a trigger input, a flasher in socket and an RS232 port, all of which facilitate integration into a remotely controlled or home automation installation.
This type of amplifier is intended for advanced multichannel home cinema use, in a dedicated room or a high-end installation featuring numerous speakers: 7.1.4, 9.1.2 or equivalent configurations, where each channel must have sufficient power to deliver dynamics and impact without compression.

What to check before buying used
On a multichannel power amplifier such as the AMP 20, it is best to check that all twelve channels are working properly one by one, as a faulty potentiometer or protection relay may only affect a single channel without impacting the others. Checking the RS232 port and the trigger / remote control inputs is also advisable if the unit is to be integrated into a remotely controlled installation. The weight and size of this type of power amplifier finally warrant a visual inspection of the chassis and rear ventilation, which are sensitive to handling knocks.
