Description
The AMP 30 is a 6-channel power amplifier from Marantz, designed to complement an AV preamplifier rather than operate on its own. Its ultra-slim format makes it easy to integrate into an existing home cinema setup, alongside other components in the chain. This is not an integrated amplifier: it requires a preamplification source to drive the six channels it houses.
The stated power output reaches 200 W per channel into 8 ohms and 400 W per channel into 4 ohms, measured at 1 kHz with a distortion rate of 0.05% on two channels. This power reserve allows it to drive demanding speakers or multi-way configurations without audible compression. The amplification stage combines Marantz's own HDAM technology, known for its speed and transparency, with Class D amplification, which offers good energy efficiency and low distortion while keeping a compact format despite the power delivered.
The unit stands out for its ability to be paired with other amplifiers from the same range, AMP 30, AMP 20 or AMP 10, as well as with preamplifiers such as the AV 30 or other Marantz AV amplifiers. This modularity allows a multichannel system to be built up gradually, adding power units as the speaker configuration expands.
This model is aimed at home cinema enthusiasts building a scalable multichannel setup who prefer to keep preamplification and power amplification separate. It will particularly suit those planning to expand their system in stages, pairing several power amplifiers with a single AV preamplifier.

What to check before buying used
On this power amplifier without a built-in preamp, the first check concerns the balanced and unbalanced RCA connectors as well as the Trigger and RS232 sockets, which can sometimes be weakened by repeated connection cycles. Testing all six channels under load makes it possible to detect a faulty HDAM stage or Class D module, which could cause distortion or dropout on a single channel. The ultra-slim format also requires a check of the internal ventilation and the condition of the heat sinks, which are put under strain by the high power output delivered into 4 ohms.
