The AV 30 is an audio-video preamplifier from Marantz, designed to drive a home cinema installation up to 11.4 channels. It sits at the heart of a system dedicated to multichannel sound, handling both video, audio decoding and distribution to external power amplifiers, without integrating any amplification itself.
The unit is built around Marantz's own discrete HDAM circuits and features an MDAX2 compressed audio amplifier. It handles video resolution up to 8K and 4K in 4:4:4 with HDCP 2.3 across its seven HDMI inputs, allowing recent sources to pass through without compromising image definition. On the audio side, it decodes DTS:X, DTS Neural:X and DTS Virtual:X among others, and features balanced preamplified outputs for all channels, including four dedicated subwoofer outputs, an advantage for finely tuning bass response according to the room.
A front-panel USB input completes the connectivity, making it easier to play content from an external device without going round to the rear of the unit.

What to check before buying used
The HDAM module and MDAX2 stage deserve an extended test across all 11.4 channels to rule out any hum or intermittent dropout on a given channel. Check that the seven HDMI inputs actually pass 4K/4:4:4 and 8K without flickering or loss of HDCP 2.3, a common fault after an incomplete firmware update. Also check that the four subwoofer outputs and the front-panel USB input work correctly, as well as whether settings are retained after a mains power cut.
