Description
The MM8077 is a 7-channel multichannel power amplifier from Marantz, intended for Home Cinema installations that require dedicated amplification rather than an all-in-one AV receiver. It draws on technological building blocks from the brand's reference hi-fi amplifiers, adapted here for multichannel operation.
The unit incorporates current feedback technology, that is, dedicated management of current feedback, combined with a discrete construction of the power amplifier stages. Each channel benefits from HDAM modules, intended to provide responsiveness and an expansive soundstage. The amplification stages are equipped with wide-bandwidth power transistors, combined with this feedback, in order to support the load impedance of any speakers on the market.
All outputs share an identical topology, which guarantees uniform behaviour from one channel to another rather than a hierarchy between front and rear channels. For each channel, the user can choose between an XLR input and an RCA input, allowing the wiring to be adapted to the source or preamplifier used, balanced or unbalanced.
This type of amplifier is aimed at multichannel Home Cinema installations already equipped with a separate preamplifier or control AV receiver, and looking to entrust the power stage to a dedicated unit across all channels, including surround and height channels where applicable.
What to check before buying used
On this type of multichannel amplifier, the gain potentiometers and protection relays of each channel deserve careful checking, particularly on the less-used rear channels, where poor contacts or a silent channel can appear after long periods of inactivity. The capacitors in the power supply and HDAM stages should also be monitored, as ageing can result in humming or a loss of dynamics. It is also worth checking the condition of the XLR and RCA connectors on each input, as well as the tightness of the speaker terminals, which are regularly used on a 7-channel amplifier.
