Description
The Model 40n is a stereo integrated amplifier from Marantz, designed to combine power amplification, a preamplifier and a full network module in a single unit. It houses an Asahi Kasei ES9016K2M DAC capable of handling files up to 24-bit/192 kHz as well as DSD64 and DSD128, allowing it to serve as the digital hub of a hi-fi system without the need for a separate player or dedicated external source.
The unit delivers 2 x 70 watts into 8 ohms and 2 x 100 watts into 4 ohms, with a stated frequency response of 5 Hz to 100 kHz and total harmonic distortion of 0.02% into 8 ohms between 20 Hz and 20 kHz. A damping factor greater than 100 into 8 ohms reflects good control over speaker driver movement, a useful point when paired with speakers that present a demanding load. Marantz's own HDAM-SA3 technology is used in the amplification stages to limit noise and preserve signal purity.
In terms of formats, the Model 40n plays compressed MP3, WMA and AAC files as well as lossless FLAC, ALAC and WAV formats, with gapless playback available on FLAC, WAV, ALAC and DSD. The sampling rate goes up to 192/24 for FLAC HD, WAV and ALAC. These features make it an amplifier suited to listening to dematerialised music and network streaming, alongside a possible analogue source.
This model is aimed at hi-fi enthusiasts who wish to centralise their system around a single unit, without multiplying separate streaming boxes, external DACs and preamplifiers. It suits both a purely digital listening setup and a mixed system including a turntable, thanks to its dedicated section.

What to check before buying used
On the Model 40n, test each digital input and the network module: a temperamental USB-DAC port or Wi-Fi/Ethernet connection often indicates a poorly maintained unit. Also check that the volume and balance potentiometers work properly, as these can develop crackling with age, along with the reliability of the protection relays at start-up. Checking the ventilation and confirming there is no unusual heating of the heatsink after extended listening is also recommended.
