Description
The MODEL 50 is a stereo integrated amplifier from Marantz, designed to drive speakers directly without additional electronics. It features an MM phono stage, allowing a turntable with a moving magnet cartridge to be connected without an external preamplifier. The unit also offers a dedicated subwoofer output, making it easy to add a subwoofer to the system.
Amplification relies on HDAM technology, here in its SA3 version, combined with a current feedback topology. The signal-to-noise ratio reaches 125 dB at the Power Amp Direct IN input, a figure reflecting a very low noise floor and therefore a clean rendering of sound nuances. This same input accepts a 1.5 V signal at 15 kOhm impedance, while the high-level input is set to 185 mV for 16 kOhm. Separate control of balance, bass and treble allows fine adjustment of the sound according to the listening room.
With its five stereo line inputs, MM phono input, pre-out output and Main In input, the MODEL 50 is aimed at a user wishing to expand their system over time: adding an external amplifier, a second pair of speakers or a Home Cinema system. It suits demanding stereo listening, whether with digital music or vinyl.

What to check before buying used
On an integrated amplifier of this type, attention should first be paid to the volume potentiometer and the balance, bass and treble controls: crackling when adjusting often indicates an oxidised contact, which is easily cleaned. Also check the proper operation of the MM phono input, which is sensitive to interference if earthing is not properly secured. The screw-type speaker terminals and RCA sockets deserve a visual check, as these are the parts most used during repeated connections.
