Description
The Marantz PM5005 SG is a stereo integrated amplifier designed to form the heart of a compact hi-fi system. It combines a power section with a dedicated phono input, allowing a turntable fitted with a Moving Magnet cartridge to be connected directly without a separate phono preamplifier.
Its output of 2 × 40 W into 8 ohms (2 × 55 W into 4 ohms) relies on Current Feedback technology, a current feedback architecture that Marantz uses to improve the responsiveness of the power stage. The discrete components are mounted on an aluminium heatsink, and the amplifier can deliver up to 16 A per channel at peak, allowing it to handle the transient current demands of dynamic musical passages without audible compression.
The unit also includes tone controls to adjust bass and treble according to room acoustics or the speakers used, as well as an automatic standby mode limiting consumption when no signal is detected.

What to check before buying used
On the PM5005, systematically test the volume potentiometer and selectors for crackling, which indicates oxidised tracks; cleaning with specific contact cleaner is usually enough to resolve this. Also check that the MM phono input works correctly, as it can sometimes be a source of hum if the associated earths or RCA connectors are worn. Checking the power stage capacitors and confirming there is no overheating of the heatsink is recommended on a unit that has seen heavy use.
