Description
The Foundation B1 is a bookshelf speaker from MartinLogan, designed to deliver detailed sound in a compact format. It can be placed on a piece of furniture or on the manufacturer's dedicated STAND25 stand, and can be paired with a subwoofer to reinforce the bass.
The Gen2 Obsidian Folded Motion S tweeter relies on a thin, folded film that increases the sound diffusion surface without taking up additional space. This principle allows treble to be reproduced with precision and speed, even on the finest nuances of a recording. Paired with a Folded Motion waveguide, it directs sound dispersion evenly throughout the room, with a 90° by 90° angle, while limiting unwanted reflections. The midrange-woofer uses a 140 mm aluminium diaphragm, a design inherited from other MartinLogan ranges for its ability to preserve clarity and detail in the mids and bass.
On the technical side, the Foundation B1 has a sensitivity of 89 dB and a nominal impedance of 5 ohms, with a recommended amplification of between 15 W and 150 W. Frequency response extends from 48 Hz to 23 kHz at -3 dB, and the crossover frequency between the tweeter and the midrange-woofer sits at 3,400 Hz.
This speaker is aimed at those with a limited listening space: a studio, office or bedroom, where the footprint of larger speakers is not practical. Its compact format and the option to pair it with a subwoofer make it a flexible foundation for a small stereo setup or a system intended to grow over time.

What to check before buying used
The aluminium midrange-woofer diaphragm should be checked for signs of dents or impact, which could affect bass reproduction. The Folded Motion tweeter, with its very thin folded film, should be inspected under raking light to detect any creases or tears. The cabinet warrants a check of the corners and finish, particularly if the speaker has spent a long time on the STAND25 stand, and the connection terminals at the rear should remain firm and free of oxidation.
