Description
The Foundation B2 is a bookshelf speaker from MartinLogan, designed to deliver refined sound reproduction in a compact format suited to a shelf or a piece of furniture. It belongs to the range of models designed to equip a living room without the bulk of a floorstanding speaker.
Its Gen2 Obsidian Folded Motion S tweeter is based on a thin folded film, a design that allows a larger radiating surface to be exposed within a reduced enclosure. This architecture favours fast treble reproduction, with good definition of detail. It is paired with a dedicated Folded Motion waveguide, which directs the tweeter's dispersion at an angle of 90° × 90°: the sound remains consistent across a wider listening area, without depending on a single listening position. The midrange-woofer driver uses a 165 mm aluminium diaphragm, a material MartinLogan employs across several of its ranges for its rigidity, sought after to limit distortion and improve clarity in the bass and midrange. The crossover frequency between the two drivers is set at 3,800 Hz.
This speaker is intended for bookshelf or small living room use, for a compact stereo system or a home cinema set-up as front satellites. Its 5 Ω impedance requires an amplifier capable of delivering current without strain, which points towards pairing it with amplifiers of suitable power in the 15 to 150 W range.

What to check before buying used
The surround of the midrange-woofer driver (the flexible ring around the aluminium diaphragm) warrants a visual check: it can harden or crack with age, which affects bass performance. Also check for any play or unwanted noise from the Folded Motion tweeter by testing treble at low and high amplitude. Finally, an inspection of the cabinet (veneer, corners, front panel) helps identify any impact damage or signs of moisture on the enclosure.
