Description
The Foundation Dynamo 12 is an active subwoofer from MartinLogan, designed to complement a home cinema installation or a stereo system by providing the bass extension that the main speakers cannot produce on their own. It houses its own amplifier, allowing it to operate independently once connected to the source or preamplifier.
The 30.5 cm driver, featuring an ultra-rigid polypropylene (URP) cone and a stamped steel basket, is mounted facing downwards in a reinforced wooden enclosure, an arrangement that limits parasitic vibrations from the cabinet and promotes a more even distribution of bass throughout the room. It is powered by a Magnitude MT-700 digital amplifier, capable of delivering 700 W peak for 350 W RMS, a power reserve that allows the most dynamic passages to be reproduced effortlessly. Signal processing is handled by a high-resolution digital signal processor (DSP) running at 200 MHz and 56 bits, tasked with keeping the sound precise and controlled. Frequency response extends from 24 to 200 Hz (± 3 dB, anechoic measurement via the LFE input), and a crossover filter adjustable between 40 and 120 Hz allows the junction with the main speakers to be fine-tuned. The rear-panel controls, volume, crossover frequency, phase and power mode, along with the left/right line and LFE inputs, complemented by an optional wireless connection via the WSK-1 kit, make integration into an existing system easier.
This subwoofer is aimed at those wishing to reinforce the bass of a home cinema system or a stereo installation without adding complex wiring, thanks to controls accessible directly on the rear of the unit.

What to check before buying used
With this type of active subwoofer, the built-in amplifier and its power supply are the first things to check: switch the unit on and check for any hum, dropouts or abnormal background noise. Also check that the rear-panel controls (volume, crossover, phase, power mode) work properly, as their potentiometers or switches can become oxidised over time. Listen to the 30.5 cm driver across its full frequency range to detect any noise from a worn suspension or distortion at high volume.
