Description
The Foundation F1 is a 3-way floorstanding speaker from MartinLogan, designed to deliver refined sound reproduction in a more compact format than the higher models in the range, such as the F2. It fits comfortably into a modestly sized living room or an office, without requiring the space usually needed for a floorstanding speaker.
Its distinctive feature is its Gen2 Obsidian Folded Motion S tweeter, a treble driver built from a thin film folded onto itself. This folding allows a large sound-radiating surface to be achieved while keeping a reduced footprint, resulting in precise and responsive treble reproduction. This tweeter is paired with a Folded Motion waveguide that directs sound dispersion at an angle of 90° x 90°, widening the comfortable listening area within the room and limiting unwanted reflections off walls or nearby furniture.
For the midrange and bass, MartinLogan has chosen 14 cm aluminium drivers: one midrange and three woofers, delivering fast response and strong power handling. This 3-way configuration aims for a balance between treble clarity, midrange precision and bass presence.
This speaker is aimed at an enthusiast wanting a floorstanding speaker capable of properly filling a medium-sized room without taking up excessive space, with a sensitivity of 92 dB that makes it compatible with moderately powered amplifiers, provided the recommended range of 15 W to 200 W is respected.

What to check before buying used
When buying used, it is worth checking the condition of the aluminium drivers, in particular checking for any deformation or play in the suspensions of the three woofers, which come under strain during prolonged listening at high volume. The Folded Motion tweeter, more fragile due to its folded-film design, also deserves careful visual inspection to rule out any accidental fold or tear that would affect treble reproduction. A listening test across the full frequency range remains the best way to confirm that all the drivers are working properly.
