Description
The Icon 3XW is a compact in-wall speaker from Martin Logan, designed for discreet integration in home cinema as well as stereo listening. It houses three drivers: an Obsidian Folded Motion XT tweeter and two 5.5-inch unidirectional carbon-fibre cone woofers fitted with a Nomex® surround, connected via a Vojtko crossover network built from audiophile-grade components.
The Folded Motion tweeter relies on a very low mass diaphragm that "squeezes" the air, requiring much less excursion than a conventional 1-inch dome tweeter. Its folded design gives it a significantly larger radiating surface, controlled dispersion and very low distortion, with the aim of capturing some of the speed and detail typical of large electrostatic panels in a compact format.
The unidirectional carbon-fibre woofers combine a high-power magnet structure with a cone described as twice as strong as steel at a sixth of its density. This rigidity is intended to allow substantial excursion, refined bass reproduction and good power handling without adding excessive weight to the diaphragm. The tweeter is rotatable, allowing horizontal or vertical installation depending on the room configuration.

What to check before buying used
The Folded Motion tweeter, with its low mass pleated diaphragm, should be inspected for deformation or impact marks, as a crushed pleat permanently affects sound dispersion. On the carbon-fibre woofers, check the condition of the cone and suspension as well as the adhesion of the Nomex® surround, which is sensitive to moisture after prolonged storage. The Vojtko crossover network also warrants an audible check on each driver, as an ageing capacitor can unbalance the frequency distribution between the tweeter and the two woofers.
